What is the STEM model about?

New technologies have impacted different fields of society. Education is one of them, and that is why new educational systems have been developed to meet the needs of today’s students. Below, we explain what the STEM model is all about and how it is transforming education and young people’s future.

Let's define STEM education

The acronym STEM was created in 1990 when the National Science Foundation combined the words science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, demonstrating the importance of integrating disciplines necessary for professional success in the 21st century. In other words, STEM areas of study should be taught as a whole, rather than in isolation.

This is the type of education proposed to develop the skills so that any student can work in a highly technological society and thus strengthen the skills necessary to enter the labor market. This is because, in today’s world, a country’s development is increasingly dependent on its educational, scientific, and innovation systems.

In this way, we seek to answer the question that most students ask themselves: “How will this help me in life?by integrating STEM areas promoting enjoyable classroom activities based on solving learning challenges of everyday life situations faced by students.

At this moment, you may be wondering: what competencies are deepened with these subjects? This is simple. In addition to incorporating the knowledge of these disciplines, the model aims to reinforce these seven skills:

  1. Problem-solving
  2. Critical thinking
  3. Creativity
  4. Innovation
  5. Leadership
  6. Collaboration
  7. Research

Recommendations for creating STEM lessons

  • Include teamwork: This promotes socialization and communication among students when solving challenges.
  • Incorporate hands-on learning: Content should encourage students to feel the desire to learn more through research and exploration.
  • Produce pertinent content: STEM has the advantage of covering everyday topics that students are interested in, so basing the lesson on real-world issues captivates and challenges them to participate in finding solutions.
  • Turn mistakes into learning opportunities: STEM allows for trial and error as it provides the opportunity to present, produce, and develop solutions to different problems.
  • Encourage creativity: It fosters a desire to learn through the use of the available tools. Currently, there are many available platforms for STEM lessons, such as CloudLabs.

STEM provides a better future with more opportunities

The STEM methodology pushes us towards innovation in teaching and learning. It invites us to use methods such as projects, technological tools, and laboratory practices to make students more receptive and help them reach their full potential.

As a result, with each technological advance and evolution, STEM education becomes an essential component in fulfilling the goal of preparing new generations with the competencies that allow them to live in a constantly changing environment and work in productive environments that do not exist today.

According to studies and experts, there will be a very high demand in the labor market for STEM jobs in the coming years which will boost the economy and the labor market. In other words, STEM reflects real life and brings employment and entrepreneurship projections through the interdisciplinary nature of the fundamental areas of education.
